Homeowners often attempt to hang paper on their own, but they fail miserably every time. John Gregoras, a professional paper-hanger from Somers in New York with almost twenty years’ experience, is here to help. We asked Gregoras to show us some of his most useful wallpapering tips, such as how to hang, align, trim and paste. Layout is crucial when hanging wallpaper. You can ensure that your pattern is well-matched and looks straight by paying attention to the order of the papers. John Gregoras recommends that you only work in one direction throughout the room in order to maintain consistency.
No matter how well you do your job, the pattern between each strip will never match. Gregoras begins his work behind a closed door. He then moves to the top of the room, tracing from the corner. The wallpaper can be unrolled. You can check for any defects by dragging the paper along the edge of the worktable.
Divide the paper into 4 inch sheets. Make sure to cut in the same area on the repeats so the patterns on adjacent sheets line up. Lay the cut sheet face down on the table. Use a paint roller to apply a thin coating of clear premixed wallpaper paste onto the back side of the paper. The paper pasted back onto itself should be folded in half, with the top and bottom sides meeting in the middle. You should ensure that the edges are straight. Smoothen the paper on its own as much as possible, without creasing it.
Allow the paste time to set aside the paper and allow it to relax. You must follow the instructions on the wallpaper’s labels. The booking time varies depending on what the wallpaper contains (more time for vinyl-coated wallcoverings; less for uncoated papers). Place the wallpaper in a corner next to a door. If the door is not in the corner, draw an imaginary line parallel to it.
Place the folded top of the booked papers on the wall. Spread it about 2 inches from the ceiling. Press it down lightly. The book’s bottom should be folded and placed on a hanger. Make sure you measure the distance between your paper and the door’s reference or casing. The paper should be adjusted so it’s parallel to the door and overlaps at least 1/8 inches in each corner.
Once the sheet has been aligned, take a piece of paper and use it to place the paper at the ceiling’s corner. From the top, use the edge of a paper smoother to sweep the sheet. Cut the excess paper from the ceiling. Insert a 6-inch tape measure into the joint of the ceiling and wall. To trim the excess, use a razor and cut the blade. Take your time. Alternate between moving and cutting the knife. Keep the knife and razor separate. Continue to adhere the paper at a point higher than the door.
